The Indian pied starling is an attractive, sharply patterned starling measuring approximately 21–24 cm, distinguished by its bold pied plumage and vibrant facial colors. It features a glossy black head, throat, and mantle contrasting cleanly with large white cheek patches, white scapular stripes, and an off-white belly. Its sharp bill is bright orange-red at the base with a pale yellowish tip, set against bare orange-red orbital skin around a pale iris. Highly gregarious and vocal, it is commonly seen striding purposefully across open ground, damp meadows, and village pastures in small flocks, probing moist soil for earthworms, grubs, and insects. In Himachal Pradesh, it is a resident breeder across the lower Shivalik foothills, broad river terraces, damp agricultural plains, and rural edges up to roughly 1,000 meters elevation.
